The following guidelines define
eligibility for FIMC-VI services. Students must be:
A. Enrolled in a formalized educational
program not exceeding grade 12.
B. Identified as visually impaired
as specified in State Board of Education Rule 6A-6.03014(2): Criteria
for eligibility. A student is eligible for a specal program for
the visually impaired if the following medical and educational criteria
are met:
(1) Medical. There is a documented
eye impairment as manifested by at least one of the following:
(a) A visual acuity of 20/70 or less in the better eye after best
possible correction; (b) A peripheral field so constricted that
it affects the student's ability to function in an educational
setting; (c) A progressive loss of vision which may affect the
student's ability to function in an academic setting; (d) For
children birth to five years of age, bilateral lack of central,
steady, or maintained fixation of vision, with an estimated visual
acuity of 20/70 or less after best possible correction; (e) bilateral
central scotoma involving the perimacula area (20/80 - 20/200);
(f) bilateral grade III, IV or V Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP);
or (g) documented eye impairments as stated in paragraph (2)(a)
of this rule.
(2) Educational. There is a documented
functional vision loss which: (a) Inhibits optimal processing
of information through the visual channel and, (b) Requires the
use of specialized techniques, textbooks, materials or equipment.
