DESCRIPTION

Session 1: Assessment, Teaching Materials and Strategies for Students with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)

During this Zoom Training, participants will be introduced to CVI, learning about the variety of names associated with it, the neurological disorders causing and associated with it, the basics about our visual brain and current research in the field. There will be an overview of the 10 visual and behavioral characteristics described by Dr. Christine Roman (2018) and the CVI Range, an assessment tool developed by Dr. Roman (2018), will be briefly reviewed. In addition, participants will learn about the latest and most promising materials to include in a Functional Vision Evaluation Kit and to use with students who visually function in Phase I, Phase II and Phase III of the CVI Range. An updated listing of FVE/CVI Kit materials will be supplied to all attendees. A review of safety procedures and policies (specific to TVIs), given COVID 19, will also be shared.

Session 2:

  • Part 1: Distance Teaching Techniques, Strategies and Materials to use with Students with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)

  • Part 2: Conducting an Informal CVI Range Assessment Virtually

During this 2020-2021 School Year, many teachers are increasingly finding that they will be teaching their students from a distant location, often through Google Classroom, FaceTime or Zoom. During this Training, participants will learn how to improve their distance teaching techniques, how to make their lessons more meaningful and how to connect their remote learning experiences to home life for the student with CVI. Specifically, this Zoom Training will focus on how to choose a platform, identify a learning goal, create a succinct lesson, extend and apply what was taught, provide feedback and finally, how to keep the focus on learning! In addition, there will be a discussion on how an informal assessment or evaluation might be conducted virtually. Come to this training and learn how one TVI does this and learn ideas for conducting a virtual evaluation of your own.
